I take a genuine approach to therapy in order to create a collaborative relationship where I focus on strengths. With these strengths we can counter the issues you are facing and help you move in a healthier direction. Also important is that all behavior has a purpose and we have the ability to choose not only our behaviors, but also our thoughts and emotions. We will work together to see which, if not all, would be best to start with. With this, I focus on movement and the direction you are headed, rather than the past and what may have "caused" you to come this place. Each of our experiences are unique and cumulative and where you move to is not dependent upon where you have come from.
My approach is also direct, but you are very much in control of where you go and how we spend our time together. Unless I see otherwise, I assume you came to therapy to make some change and wish to make that change and quickly as possible to move in a new direction. As a therapist, it is my job to keep ahead of you to keep us moving in this new direction and to eventually bring you to a place that you no longer need to meet regularly.
While I have worked with many people, most of my time has been spent with adolescents, students, young professionals, and adults. The time you spend earning your degree and venturing out in to the professional world are two very stressful, but important times in a person's life. Unfortunately, we are not always provided with the proper guidance or support to find our way.
I have also helped with a wide range of problems. However, I have the most experience with those who are having difficulties managing anger, anxious, or struggling to succeed. We all feel angry at times, get anxious, and find ourselves in situations that we can't seem to make our way out of. These often issues experienced by those who are eager to thrive, but hinder us in our work, relationships, community, and taking care of ourselves.
I have always worked in the field of mental health in some capacity since I was an undergraduate with different internships and my work as an emergency medication technician. After graduation I worked in correctional facility, with much of my time being spent on the mental health unit. While finishing my degree at the Adler School, I completed my clinical practicum with the City Colleges of Chicago. After graduation I worked with a nonprofit, then a clinic that focused on anger management, and finally to a private practice. Now I have decided to venture out on my own and start my own practice. Though I have chosen to move on from these positions, I am thankful for all the time I spent in each and those who supported and mentored me along the way.
Academics and Licensure
I graduated from the Adler School of Professional Psychology with a master's degree in counseling psychology and from the College of Urban Planning and Public Administration at the University of Illinois at Chicago with a master's degree in public administration. Before that, I obtained a bachelor's degree in psychology and criminal justice from Muskingum College, now Muskingum University.
I have earned a certification in anger management from Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA). Also, I have spent much time studying with and under notable Adlerians.
